CE course offerings from the University of Washington

University of Washington will be offering two courses that may be of interest to dental lab technicians.

The restorative options for replacing missing anterior teeth have changed significantly in recent years. No longer will restorative dentists routinely consider full-coverage conventional fixed bridges when adjacent teeth are unrestored. Resin-bonded (Maryland) bridges, developed in the 1970s, were popular early on, but long-term studies have shown that resin-bonded bridges have a high failure rate and eventually become a maintenance problem for the restorative dentist and a nuisance for the patient. Since implants were introduced into the United States in the early 1980s, they have revolutionized removable and fixed prosthodontics. This implant revolution has now spilled over into single-tooth replacement. Many patients have already heard about implants, and prefer them to replace missing maxillary anterior teeth. But these types of restorations are extremely technique sensitive. Several issues must be resolved before implants should be considered. An orthodontist is often necessary in order to prepare the implant site properly. The surgeon must place the implant in the proper position, at the appropriate age, and with the correct technique. The restorative dentist must be aware of the appropriate techniques for shaping the papilla and matching the existing adjacent natural anterior teeth. The aftermath of improper implant therapy could be disastrous. This presentation will discuss the orthodontic, surgical and restorative implications, when implants are planned as replacements for missing maxillary teeth in the esthetic zone. The Ernest M. Jones Memorial Lectureship is a complimentary annual event sponsored by the University of Washington Dental Alumni Association and the Dean Jones Memorial Endowment Fund. The day-long lecture is free to all dentists, dental co-professionals, dental faculty, and students. Six AGD credits may be earned by attending the lecture. Six Continuing Dental Education credits may also be earned by attending the lecture. For CDE credits, a $30 handling fee will be charged. This year's event will be held at Benaroya Hall in Downtown Seattle in anticipation of more people wanting to hear these great speakers. More detailed registration information will be available soon. Until that time, make a note of the date Friday, March 25th and this year's change in location.
