Criteria and Guidelines for NBC recognition
of Study Groups
- To obtain recognition by the NBC, a study group must submit:
- a copy of its bylaws as approved by its membership;
- the list of current officers, including names, addresses and telephone numbers;
- a schedule of at least three education programs, showing dates, topics and speakers
- To retain recognition by the NBC, a study-group must:
- sponsor at least four technical education programs per year, including at least six hours of instruction that is approved by the NBC for documented scientific credit
- provide the NBC with advance notification of the programs it is offering either by filing program schedules with the NBC or by keeping NBC Headquarters on the mailing list to receive program announcements as they are mailed to study group members;
- provide the NBC "Continuing Education Credit Forms" for sign-in by the CDTs and RGs who attend the approved programs and return the completed forms to NBC in strict compliance with the policies and requirements of the NBC;
- complete in a timely manner the information questionnaire that is sent by NBC to all recognized study groups for the purpose of obtaining information for publication in the Who's Who Directory;
- designate and inform the NBC of a CDT member-officer or otherwise-who is charged with specific responsibility for liaison with the NBC;
- refrain from scheduling events in direct competition with the announced programs of recognized state, regional and national organizations; and
- generally support and promote the certification and continuing education programs and goals of the National Board for Certification.
- The following services and courtesies will routinely be available from the NBC to the study groups it recognizes:
- advice and consultation in initial organization and ongoing administration of study group programs.
- current copies of NBCs "Continuing Education Register."
- publicity through The Journal of Dental Technology.
- access to the "WOK" Videotape Library.
- Membership: the qualifications for membership shall remain the prerogative of each individual study group-with the exception that no bylaw, policy or action of an NBC-recognized study group may serve to deny membership to any CDT, RG or bona-fide CDT candidate.
- Officers: Study groups may elect officers as they see fit, but should include at least a chairman, secretary-treasurer and program chairman. The Board requires that the chairman and program chairman be CDTs.
- Finances: NBC-recognized study groups may levy dues, assessments and admission charges as may be required to finance the educational activities of the group. However, charges should be maintained at a level that will permit membership and/or program attendance by all interested CDTs and RGs.
- Programming: To be recognized by the NBC, study groups must sponsor presentations directed primarily to laboratory material science and fabrication techniques, and may also include health and safety subjects including infection control. Personal development, community interests and other topics may be presented provided that they do not exceed 20% of the programming for any calendar year
- Purpose: To be recognized by the NBC, a study group's sole purpose must be the continuing education of the dental technician. No significant portion of the study group's activity or resources may be directed toward activities or services that relate specifically to the management of a business and which would more appropriately be offered by a dental laboratory association.
- Administration: Study groups must be responsible for understanding and complying with applicable corporate legal and tax liabilities for themselves. The NBC is a certifying Board, and although it wishes to encourage continuing education by encouraging and recognizing educational study groups, it does not accept responsibility for the administrative actions of those groups.
- NBC Recognition: Study groups are authorized and encouraged to represent themselves as being recognized by the NBC. However, study groups should not use "NBC" as part of their names or in any other manner which might infer that they are an official agency or subsidiary of the NBC.
